Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) a premier institution in the country is comparable to the best Universities in the world is setup in 2009 at Dharmshala and temporarily has started working from Sanskriti Sadan (Writers' Building) while academic activities from Shahpur. Central University is to have two campuses at Dehra and Dharmshala both in the Kangra district. The University HQ will remain at Dharmshala 19km from district HQ while academics will be at the main campus Dehra town on bank of river Beas 37km from district HQ Kangra.
The University will provide the opportunity to study in a curricular framework that is at par with the best practices in the world. All Programmes of Studies are planned to be modular with lateral exit and entry and are inherently multi-disciplinary that through Comprehensive Choice Based Credit System enable students to make the easy to complete their chosen Programme of Studies. This also includes accepting transfer of credits earned by students in other recognised universities and enabling them to accumulate certain credits from other institutions of repute in India and abroad.
The University has a semester system and operates on comprehensive continuous internal assessment. The focus is to help students realise their full potential & acquire knowledge, values, skill sets and develop aptitude required to fulfil the modern needs.
University is contemplating to have the Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses either through the colleges maintained by University or through its affiliates in the streams of Medical Sciences, Health & Allied Sciences, Engineering Sciences & Technology, Planning, Architecture & Design, Physical & Material Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science & Information Technology, Humanities & Languages, Social Sciences, Education, Management Sciences, Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Management, Fine Arts & Art Education, Journalism, Mass Communication & New Media, Physical Education, Sports and Athletics and Law & Jurisprudence.
