On 15th April 1948, Himachal Pradesh was recognized as the Chief Commissioner Province of Indian Union. This was as a result of merging 30 princely states of Punjab and Shimla Hills into the Indian Union. These 30 princely states were Baghat, Bhajji, Baghal, Beja, Balsan, Bushahr, Chamba, Darkoti, Delath, Dhadi, Dhami, Ghund, Jubbal, Khaneti, Koti, Kumarsain, Kunihar, Kuthar, Mandi, Madhan, Mahlog, Mangal, Ratesh, Keonthal, Rawingarh, Sangri, Sirmaur, Suket, Tharoch and Theog. All these areas were put into four districts viz. Chamba, mahasu, Mandi and Sirmaur. In 1951 it was made a part ‘C’ state.
Bilaspur was another part ‘C’ at that time. On 1st July, Bilaspur was merged with Himachal Pradesh to add one more district to it. Until the year 1956, Himachal Pradesh remained as the part ‘C’ state of the nation. In 1956 it was decided to abolish the categorization of states as part A,B,C etc. and recommended to merge them to give higher status or make them union territories. This decision eas taken in the Reorganization Commission headed by Mr. Justice Faizal Ali.
Thus after 1956, Himachal Pradesh was declared the union territory till any further decision was taken. Himachal Pradesh was then given the full fledged statehood on 25th January, 1971. Since then 25th January is celebrated as Himachal Day throughout the state. On Janjuary 25th, 2010, Himachal Pradesh celebrated its 30th year of statehood.
Kangra district was further broken into Hamirpur and Una districts on 1st September 1972, thus adding two more districts to Himachal Pradesh. In the same year Mahasu district was trifurcated to Shimla and Solan districts. Since 1972, Himachal Pradesh started having changes in administrative set up. Now Himachal Pradesh has in total 12 districts viz. Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul & Spiti, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan, Una.
