Famous Festivals in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh also known as Dev Bhumi is a very spiritual state. Himachal Pradesh is the home of above 6 million populations. The people of different casts and religion live here. The majority of people are the follower of Hindu religion, but there is also significant number of people of other religion live in Himachal. Throughout the year many festivals are celebrated by the people of Himachal. Some of these festivals which are of great significance are listed hereunder:

1.Lohri:

This Hindu festival is celebrated in the month of January. On Lohri festival group of youths from every village gather in the night and sing Lohri songs by visting the houses located in that particular village. This ritual continues before seven days of Lohri. On the eight day people celebrate Lohri with their family members and relatives by eating ‘Gazk’ , ground nut etc. Youth of the village burn logs of wood known as ‘Geetha’ in local language on this particular day.

2.Makkar Sakranthi:

Makkar Sakaranthi is celebrated on the next day of Lohri. People celebrate this festival by eating ‘Kichri’ .

3.Shivarathri:

Sivarathri is one of the famous Hindu festival celebrated in the month of February. Devotees of Lord Shiva keep fast on the day of Shivarathri. Shivarthri of district Mandi is famous all over the India.

4.Holi:

Holi festival is celebrated in the month of March. On the day of Holi people apply both dry colors and water colors on each other to celebrate this day.

5.Baisakhi:

Baisakhi festival is celebrated in the month of April. Baisakhi is famous Sikh festival, but also celebrated by Hindus. Baisakhi festival marks the harvesting of wheat crop.

6.Rakshabandan:

Rakshabandan is celebrated in the month of August. Rakshabandan also known as ‘Rakhi’ or ‘Rakhnu’ in the local language. On Rakshabandan sisters tie ‘Rakhi’ on the wrist of their beloved brothers and brothers give some gift to them. On this day brothers vow of helping their sisters in every hurdle of life.

7.Dusherra:

Dusherra is also a famous Hindu festival celebrated in the month of October. On this day Lord Rama defeated Ravana the king of Sri Lanka. Kullu’s Dusherra is famous all over the world. Kullu’s Dusherra has been acclaimed as International festival.

8.Diwali:

Diwali also known as ‘Deepawali’ is celebrated not only in India but also across the globe by millions of Hindus. Diwali festival falls in the month of October. On This day Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile according to Hindhu’s mythology.
