Naina Devi Temple in Bilaspur Himachal Pradesh


Naina Devi temple is one of the fifty one Shakti Peeths in India and is situated in Shivalik hills in Bilaspur District.

Naina devi as the name suggests comes from the word naina which means “eyes” is situated on the pinnacle of shivalik hills in Bilaspur District. The temple is many years old. And every day thousand of pilgrims come here for worship.

Naina Devi is given its name for a historic reason. It is said that goddess Parvati who is also known as Sati once jumped into bonefire and killed herself as the insult of her Husband by her father abashed her. When Lord Shiva saw this he got incensed and took the Satti’s body in his arms and started moving to the whole universe. At that time Lord Vishnu unlashed his sudarshan chakra to cut sati’s body into fifty one pieces to stop Lord Shiva’s anger. And the places where these parts of Sati fell are known as Shakti Peeths. As eyes of Satti were fell in this top hill of Bilaspur place is known as Naina Devi.

One more story is related to Naina Devi.In that area there used to be a community of Gujjars. A gujjar with name Naina was a very srong Devotee of Durga Maa. He everyday went to Hilllock to graze his cattle. There is a peepal tree in the temple. He used to saw and wonder that when cow comes under that peepal tree milk started dropping out of it .Few days later he saw idol of Goddess Durga under the tree. Also on that night in his dream he saw Durga maa, and She told him to built a temple at that place. And also said that temple will be famous with his name,Naina. As he was a real Devotee of Durga maa.He laid the stone for temple on the next day. And later built a temple.Since then number of pilgrims come every year to pay homage to Goddess Durga. Inside the temple maa is present in the form of shrine. Near the temple there is a narrow cave known as Naina Devi Cave.

As number of pilgrims come here to worship maa enough facilities are available in the temple for the pilgrims.One can reach the Naina Devi temple either by trekking or by ropeway which has been provided since few years back.By foot it takes about an hour to reach the temple.While through ropeway one can reach the temple in just twenty minutes.There is also staying facility for pilgrims in temple premises.
