Snowfall time in Shimla
|
Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh is known as the ‘Queen of hills’,’ Dev Bhumi ‘, the Summer Capital of India, but it is best known for its beautiful and mind blogging view during or after the snowfall which cannot be expressed in words. The snowfall can be called one of the major reasons why tourists are attracted towards Shimla which is a perfect example of different colours of ‘prakriti’ (nature) put together.
It snows usually in the last week of January and mostly the whole of February in Shimla. Cold ice storms start blowing , the sky gets covered with thick black clouds and a very dry and silent atmosphere starts building up when it is about to snow in Shimla . It usually stars snowing at night and may continue for days without stopping or it may be a small pour, all depending on the climatic conditions at that instant in a particular region of Shimla.
Snowfall is most awaited by all the residents of Shimla and by the tourists too. This blessing of nature is so very unpredictable that tourists keep returning back year after year without watching the snow falling if they are not lucky enough! It is wondrous for the tourists and small children to see white flakes of snow looking like tiny balls of cotton falling from the clouds . All the roads, every rooftop, every small branch the pine trees, and even every single cable wire is covered with snow during winters in Shimla. All the plantation fields are lashed with snow the whole of Shimla is covered under a snowy blanket, all the roads are blocked for some time after the snowfall, this picturesque and aesthetic view of Shimla is incomparable and very relaxing to look at. Famous snow spots in and around Shimla are, Jakhoo Hills, Kufri, Narkanda.
Snowfall is very vital for good yield of crops especially for apples, almonds and pears. Any disturbance in the snowfall pattern further disturbs the economy of the state, H.P. The cash crop apple depends a lot on the timely snowfall in upper regions.
There are some problems which the residents of Shimla have to face during winters due to snowfall like all the water supply pipes freeze due to extremely low temperature after the snowfall. Shimla highway being the only main route joining the upper Himachal to the rest of the Country the transportation facility is disturbed due to landslides and blocked roads, sometimes major electricity failures take place which take a long time to be repaired due to adverse climatic conditions.
Due to increase in global warming, pollution and population the snowfall pattern is greatly been distorted in Himachal. If we have a look at the snowfall statistics of last ten years in Himachal, the graph keeps on falling. This is a threat to the economy, vegetation, wildlife, and residents of Shimla .
Therefore it has become very important for the government, citizens of Shimla and for the tourists as well to work towards the preservation of environment in Shimla and keep it green and healthy so that it keeps snowing heavily every year and it can be called no less than a paradise, as always .
