Continuous Surge in Corruption Rate in Himachal Pradesh

It has been seen in the last four years that corruption rate is burgeoning at a greater place in the state like Himachal Pradesh. Measures have to be taken to stop the growing corruption in Himachal.

Though Himachal has a very less percentage of corruption as compared to other states in India but if we compare the previous year corruption statistics of Himachal with the present day we get a rising graph of corruption rate. The government sector in Himachal is slowly getting tarnished by increase in corruption rate. The sincerity and honesty of Himachali officers seems now to be at stake as most of them are nowadays tempted towards easy money earning through bribes. Bribery is not the case only at lower levels of government but such cases have made the headlines of Amar Ujala, Dainik Bhaskar, Divya Himachal and other national newspapers in which IAS officers have been the culprits. Such incidences of corruption are a major blow to the fair play of the state like Himachal.

If we look into the past four years reports it has been found that 404 officers have been charged with corruption. 96 cases have been registered out of these in the court while others are still under the investigation process. It has been seen that maximum of the officers had a handsome salary and other luxuries but in spite of that they were allured by the easy money of bribery. Many of the officers have been caught red handed in Himachal in case of bribery. Departments like Public Works, Revenue, Panchayati Raj Institutions, Town and Country Planning, Rural Development, Police, Education and Health and many more in Himachal have been engulfed in the crime bribery. About 46 officers have been arrested in the year 2009 from various departments in taking bribe money from the general public in Himachal. It is even shameful to hear that three female government employees in Himachal were also caught red handed.

Corruption cases in past four years in Himachal are as follows:

2006: In the year 2006 there were 64 corruption cases in Himachal and 16 officers were trapped.
2007: In the year 2006 there were 81 corruption cases in Himachal and 16 officers were trapped.
2008: In the year 2006 there were 95 corruption cases in Himachal and 24 officers were trapped.
2009: In the year 2006 there were 164 corruption cases in Himachal and 46 officers were trapped.

Bribery is not only eating away the state’s fair play but there are many others. Corruption in politics, smuggling of Charas and Marijuana, electricity thefts etc. are some other serious issues of corruption in Himachal. It is high time now to look into the growing corruption rate in Himachal. In order to maintain the sanctity of Himachal as the corruption less state, every department, or we should say, every resident of Himachal should be faithful to his/her work. Police and vigilance officials need to take the utmost care to nip the evil of corruption in the bud.
