The Fort of Kangra was taken by the irresistible Mahmud of Ghazni in A.D. 1009. In 1337 the Kangra Fort was captured by Muhammad Tughlaq and again in 1351 by his successor Firoz Shah.
But it di not fall into Mohammadan power permanently until 1622, when after a siege of fourteen months
Kangra Fort was conquered by Jahangir
who garrisoned it with his troops and appointed a Mughal Governor to keep the turbulent hill chiefs in check. The surrounding district however with the exception of imperial demesne remained in the hands of
Katoch Rajas who claims descent from the ancient rulers of Trigarta.
When in the second half of the 18th century the Mughal power rapidly declined,
Raja Sansar Chand-11 succeeded in 1786 in recovering the ancient fortress (Kangra Fort)
of his ancestors. But by carrying his ambitious designs too far,
Raja Sansar Chand came into conflict, first with the neigbouring hill chiefs, then with the Gurkhas and finally with Ranjit Singh to whom was compelled to surrender the Kangra Fort in 1809.
Kangra Fort remained in the hands of Sikhs till 1846.when it was handed over to the British government along with the hills country as for the Ravi up to 1905 it was garrisoned by British troops.
