In the past few years Himachal has observed a great downfall in the apple production. In order to meet this problem and give a pace to apple production, Himachal government has taken a project of replacing old and outdated apple orchards by advanced variety apple orchards so as to increase the apple production in Himachal.

Apple being the major cash crop of Shimla, Kullu and Kinnaur districts generates good revenue both for the state, Himachal as well as the main source of income for the agriculturists. But when we look into the yearly statistics of apple production in Himachal, the graph has continuously dropped down. This decrease in apple production has not only hampered the common man but also brought frowns in Himachal government.

Figures Showing Decrease in Annual Apple Production in Himachal:

Data shows that apple production has been going consistently down in the past three years.

Year 2007-2008- 5.92 lakh metric tonnes of apple production in Himachal.
Year 2008-2009- 5.10 lakh metric tonnes of apple production in Himachal.
Year 2009-2010- 2.80 lakh metric tones of apple production in Himachal. This year the apple production has reduced to almost half the last year.

Himachal government has given a serious concern towards the continuous plummeting of the annual output of the apple production in Himachal. Recently Himachal government has planned to take a project under which low yielding variety of apple orchards in Himachal will be replaced by advanced, high yielding variety apple orchards to increase the annual production of apples in Himachal.

Apple Rejuvenation Project of worth Rs. 85 crore which is a part of annual state plan for 2011 will work on planting advanced variety apple orchards in Himachal. It is expected that in the next five years all the old, low variety yielding and outdated apple trees will be replaced by the advance variety apple orchards. This will cover approximately an area of 12,500 acres in Himachal.
