Famous personalities Major Somnath Sharma- 'First recipient of Param Veer Chakra'

Major Somnath Sharma was from district kangra of Himachal Pradesh. Major Somnath Sharma was the first soldier after India's independence to receive Param Veer Chakra the highest medal for bravery posthumously.

Major Somnath Sharma was born on 31 January, 1923. Maj. Somnath Sharma's father Major General A.N. Sharma was also a military officer, so patriotism was in the blood of Maj. Somnath Sharma. Maj. Somnath Sharma did his schooling from Sherwood College Naini Tal which is a famous hill station of Uttrakhand state. After passing out from Indian Military Academy Dheradhun Maj. Somnath Sharma was commissioned in 4 Kumaon Regiment. Maj. Somnath Sharma also fought against Japan's Army in World War-II which ended in 1945.

Major Somnath Sharma got to martyrdom in 1947 against the battle with intruders from Pakistan. For his remarkable bravery Maj. Somnath Sharma was awarded Param Veer Chakra the highest military award posthumously. Major Somnath Sharma became the first recipient of Param Veer Chakra from Himachal Pradesh as well as from India. Martyr Major Somnath Sharma is one the most famous personalities from Himachal Pradesh.
