Old Mummy Found in Giu Village in Spiti, HP


A mummy was found in Giu a village situated in the Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh

Giu is a village situated in Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh. The Giu villagers have known about the mummy since 1975, when an earthquake struck the region.

The Indo Tibetan border police were digging when they found this mummy in Giu village. During this digging it was found that blood came out of the mummy and hair were visible on mummy.

Holy beads and some holy books were also found with the mummy. The villagers in Spiti have made a temple for the mummy. The mummy is said to be 500 year old. The mummy is identified as that of monk Sangha Tenzin. The villagers worship daily in the temple.

The mummy is hunched, meditating position draped with shawl. The holy beads are in his hand a head bowed towards the holy books kept in front of him.

The mummy is well preserved till this age. It is a beautiful experience to visit this place.
