Tabo Monastery in Spiti Valley


Tabo Monastery has the largest Monastic complex.

Tabo monastery is situated in Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh. Tabo monastery was founded in 996 AD by Rinchen Zangpo Wo was a teacher. Tabo Monastery has the largest monastic complex among the entire monastery in the spiti valley.

There are 350 people as resident who are living in Tabo. Tabo monastery is also known as "tabo- chos-khor" the literal meaning of which is "doctrinal circle". There are wall paintings and statues. These depict the life hsitory of Lord Buddha.

It is said that the Tabo monastery was made in just one night. There are series of caves and sheer cliff above the monastery. These were served as the residence of the monks. When you enter the monastery you will find a big hall where all the monks worship here in the hall daily.

These paintings in the monastery are similar to the Ajanta- Ellora painting in Maharashtra. It comprises of nine temples and 23 chorten, a monks chamber, and a nuns chamber.
