About Gaddi Community in Himachal


Gaddis, Tribes of Himachal resides mainly in Kangra and Chamba Districts.

Gaddis are basically shephards who owns number of sheep and goats. Though the community is also present in Mandi, Kullu and Bilaspur but the major population of Gaddis live in Kangra District and Bharmaur in Chamba.
The origin of Gaddis is still a topic of debate. This is because in earlier days Gaddis did not have their permanent home. In the summers they used to climb up the Himalayas with their sheep and goat ( commonly known as Dhan). In the winters they used to roam around in the plane areas. There are many theories about the origin of Gaddis but none of them has arrived at the conclusion. Few theories believe that the Gaddis have originated from plains mainly from Punjab.

Gaddi community speak their own gaddi dialect. They also speak other languages like pahari and hindi. The population of Gaddis is very small. The exact number is not available. This small community possess its unique culture. They have their own folk songs, unique, attractive and colourful Gaddi dress and a different way of performing poojas.

Gaddi Topi (cap) is know famous and worn all over in Himachal.Gaddi dance called Naati is very famous in Himachal Pradesh.Gaddis have a stong built and has very good stamina. They can carry quintil of load on their back and travel non stop in the Himalayan region. The people in this community are honest hard working and very affectionate. Now a very small population is left with Dhan (sheep and goat). Most of the Gaddis now do farming or weaving and have taken up Government Jobs.
