Himachal Glaciers


Famous Himachal glaciers serving as the major source of fresh water for the people living in the plains of northern and eastern India.

In the Himachal Himalayas, there are number of glaciers which are playing a vital role in providing fresh water and electricity not only to Himachal Pradesh but to number of people living in the plains of northern and eastern India.

Important Glaciers in Himachal Pradesh:



1. Bara Shigri: Bara Shigri glacier is the largest glacier in the famous Chandra Valley of Lahaul spiti and it is very difficult to track on. It is about 3kms. wide and 25 km.long.

2. Chandra : Chandra glacier is responsible for forming Chandertal lake and has been seperated from Bara Shigri glacier.

3. The Lady of Keylong: Situated at an altitude of about 6061mt.in Keylong, Lahaul Spiti.

4. Mukila: the Mukila glacier of Bhaga valley is situated at the height of about 6478mt.

5. Bhaga: Bhaga glacier is a source of bhaga river and later merges with Chandra and forms Chenab after Tandi.

6. Sonapani: The Sonapani glacier was surveyed by Walker and Pascoe in 1906.It is visible from the Rohtang Pass.

7. Perad: Perad glacier is a small easily accessible glacier near Putiruni, which in local dialect means brocken rock.

8.Mukkila and Miyar: Mukkila and Miyar glaciers located in the lahaul area are about in 12 kms. in length.

9. Dudhon and Parbati: Dudhon and Parbati glaciers impart water for Parbati stream each are about 15km. in length.

10. Beas Kund: Beas Kund glacier is located on the South facing slopes of the towering Pir Panjal range near the Rohtang Pass in Manali region.

11. Bhadal: Bhadal glacier is located on the South Western slopes of the Pir Panjal range in the Bara Banghal region of Kangra district.

12. Chandra Nahan: Chandra nahan glacier is located on the South-Eastern slopes of the main Himalayan range in the area North-West of Rohru in Shimla district.

These are the most important glaciers of the Himachal Pradesh which not only provides water to drink and electricity but also gives an assurance tha our border areas are naturally protected by them.
