Norbulingka Institute - Sidhpur Dharamshala

The basic aim behind foundation of Norbulingka Institute was to preserve Tibetan culture, language and heritage.

Norbulingka was established in the year 1988 by His Highness The Dalai Lama at a village (Sidhpur) near Dharamshala Himachal Pradesh. Norbulingka name has adopted from the residence of Dalai Lamas which is also known as Norbulingka in Tibet. The residence in Tibet is called Norbulingka Palace

The architecture of Norbulingka institute is also a copy of the Norbulingka Palace in Tibet. The building is more or less similar to the Palace.

After he took refuge in India after Chinese Invasion The Dalai Lama has made Dharamshala its Capital. There is a Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamshala and they have one Department of Religion and Culture took the initiative in the foundation of Norbulingka Institute.

Norbulingka Institute consists of Literary and Cultural Research Centre, Centre of Arts, Academy of Tibetan Culture and one Libraray of Tibetan Publications. In the year 1995 Norbulingka Foundation was set up to ensure that ancient art practices of Tibet especially Craft are preserved.

Norbulingka Institute runs 2 Tibetan retreats, Norling and Chonor House Former at Sidhpur Institute and latter at Mcleodganj.

Centre of Arts This centre offers specialized training for making unique Tibetan Statues. Apart from statue making it imparts training in Thangka Paintings, wood carving,metal craft,metal craft and tailoring.

Academy of Tibetan Culture The Academy offers a higher education course in Tibetan Studies(Traditional). This is a 6 year course. The Academy was set up in 1997.

Seat of Happiness Temple Also known as Deden Tsuglakhang is a 2 storey temple. It is famous for over 1100 Budha Murals and unique wall paintings (Frescoes) of Dalai Lamas. Another attraction is four meter high Budha Statue built of copper.
