The Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla, a premier Institution of National importance was established in 1949 under Ministry of Agriculture. The Institute is commodity based and lone research institution on potato functioning at Shimla under Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) New Dehli. The Institute has 07 regional research stations spread over the different locations in the country. The CPRI has many credits in the field and has developed 45 varieties of Potato's that suited different agro-climate. The institute has excellent library and information support unit.

Central Potato Research Institute work on the following disciplines like Breeding, Bio-Technology, Culture (crop improvement and production), Physiology, Nutrition, Soil and Water Management, Crop Protection, Crop Engineering, Post-harvest technology, Extension of technology and Transfer of technology.
