Location


Ponta Sahib is about 45kms from Nahan, 45kms from Dehra Dun, 118kms from Haridwar and 178kms from Shimla. Ponta Sahib is situated on the banks of river Yamuna.

The town is very beautiful. The views of river Yamuna are very fascinating. The site of the dam is very beautiful.

Gurudwara of Ponta Sahib is one of the holiest places of the place. One can come here for the real peace of mind.

The place is about to start water sports facility as the water of the river Yamuna is being dammed, which will have a water reservoir where these sports activities will take place.

Holy City Ponta Sahib


Ponta Sahib is built in the memory of the tenth Guru of Sikhs Guru Govind Singh. The name of the place is derived from the stories of Guru Govind Singh. The first story is that Guru Govind Singh put his foot on this place. The placed was named Ponta Sahib as the meaning of of "Ponta" is "foot". The second story says that Guru Govind Singh lost a foot ornament called "Ponta" while he was bathing in the river Yamuna.

History


There is a story famous for Ponta Sahib that Sirmouri Tal near Ponta Sahib was destroyed by the curse of a court dancer. The story says that the ruler of the princely state took a oath to give half of his kingdom to the court dancer if she crosses a narrow gorge on a rope. The court dancer did that but the ruler again offered her that if she comes back dancing on the rope she will be given whole of the kingdom by the ruler. When the court dancer on half the way back the cruel ruler cut the rope and the girl was dumped into the stream. As a result flood followed and swept away the beautiful city, the ruler, royal house and his kingdom was destroyed by the curse of the court dancer.

How to reach


The place is easily approachable by road from Nahan, Dehra Dun, Haridwar, Solan and Shimla. There are many busses plying on this route. The other option is hire a taxi or a maxi-cab to visit Ponta Sahib.

Stay


HPTDC run Hotel Yamuna is situated here. One can also stay in PWD rest house, Ponta Sahib Gurudwara, SFDA Bhawan, Maa Bala Sundri temple's sarai. There are many other hotels and cottages in Ponta Sahib where rooms are available at reasonable prices.
