Temples in Kangra


Kangra is a holy and sacred place of Himachal Pradesh. Kangra is also one of the famous tourist places of Himachal Pradesh. Kangra is very famous for temples.

Kangra


Kangra is a historical city of the state. The town was destroyed during the earthquake of the year 1905. The Kangra today is known as new Kangra. Kangra is a very beautifual and fascinating place. Tourists visit here to see the real beauty Kangra is offering and also to get the blessings of the Gods and Goddesses. One can get peace of mind by visiting the temples here.

Brijeshwari Temple


The one of the most famous and wealthy temple is located here at Kangra. The temple is one of the fifty one holy Hindu Shaktipeeths. The temple is also famous for being the targets of many invasions including one by Mahmud of Ghajni.

The Chamundaji Temple


The temple is located on the bank of river Baner popularly known as Banganga. There is a ghat or a bathing place where pilgrims take bath. There are many statues in the temple complex. The facility of boating is also available. The view of the Dhauladhar hills covered with snow is very beautiful. The place should be visited to get peace of mind.

Distance
The famous temple is located at a distance of 16kms from Dharamshala and 24kms from Palampur.

The Jwalamukhi Temple


The speciality of the temple is that the temple does not have a idol of Jwala Mata. There is a flame which comes out of the rocks and the flame itself is treated to be the Goddess Jwalamukhi. The flame is alive here from many many centuries. It is a believed the tongue of the Goddess Sati fell here at the site of the temple and so the temple is considered as one of the fifty Shaktipeeths of the country. Emperor Akbar donated gilt umbrella fro the eternal flame of the temple. The dome of the temple is glided in gold by the Maharaja of Punjab Ranjit Singh. The wonderful temple is point of attraction for many piligrims.

Distance
The temple is situated at a distance of 38kms from Kangra and 55kms from Dharamshala.

The Rock Temples


The Rock temples are situated at Masroor. The temples were built from 720 AD to 800 AD.The temples were Shiva temples at the beginning but now the central holy place is called Thakurwara and the temple has idols Shri Ram, Sita mata and Lakshman ji placed in it.

Climate


The climate here is pleasing except in winter when the temperature can go near to freezing point.

Clothes


Woollens for winter and light woollens or cottons are recommended for summer.

Stay


There are many hotels, cottages and srais around the temples. Also there are srais built inside some of the temples. Rooms are available here at very reasonable rates.
