About IIT Mandi

Indian Institute of Technology or IIT Mandi is located on the backdrop of snow capped mountains in Mandi Himachal Pradesh free from the hustle and bustle of city life. IIT Mandi is an autonomous and is one of the youngest IITs in India set up by Ministry of Human resource development (MHRD) Government of India. IIT Mandi was established in the year 2009 and is situated in the serene valley facing the mighty Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh.

Currently, IIT Mandi operates and functions from a transit campus at Mandi town in Himachal Pradesh. Permanent campus is slated to be complete by Mid 2011 and is around 12 km from this small and beautiful town of Mandi. The huge and beautiful upcoming campus of IIT mandi is under construction and is located in Kamand near Mandi on the banks of Uhl River which is a tributary to River Beas.

IIT mandi has admitted students into various B.Tech.,M.S, and Ph.D.programs in 2010 Batch. Director of IIT Mandi is Prof. Timothy A. Gonsalves who joined the institute on Jan 15, 2010.

IIT Mandi will shift to its new Campus at Kamand very soon. IIT Mandi Kamand Campus is around 12 away from Mandi town. The upcoming IIT Mandi campus at Kamand is all set to offer state of the art facilities to the students with world-class academic environment.

IIT mandi Kamand will be the only IIT camous in India so close to the nature and natural splendor. IIT Mandi Kamand Campus offers will offers modern classrooms to the students, labs and libraries of international standards apart from sports and extra-curricular facilitie. Well maintained and hostel accommodation to the students will be available at IIT Mandi. IIT Mandi campus will also ensure on-campus housing for all faculty and students, a shopping centre, guest houses for visitors, and a school.

IIT Mandi new campus at Kamand around 12 Km from Mandi is spread across 565 acres (2.29 km2) of land. The land for IIT mandi for this new campus has been allocated for by the government of Himachal Pradesh. The new IIT Mandi campus also has a "Nala" passing through it. Government also plans to build a 2 MW SHP station to utilize the water flowing in this nala. Complete IIT Mandi will start functioning in the new campus by 2013.

Till that time there are 3 sites allotted for IIT Mandi transit campus within the Mandi town.

The IIT Mandi Transit Campus sites are

• Vallabh Degree College campus, Mandi for academic activities

• Mandav Hotel for Administration, staff residences and the women's hostels

• IIT Mandi boys Hostel at Jail Road (approx 2 km away)

• IIT Mandi boys hostel(1st year) adjacent to Academic building,IIT Mandi.

The IIT campus has classrooms other facilities including librararies, laboratories and faculty offices. The IIT Mandi Campus also has shared sports facilities include cricket, football, hockey, tennis, badminton, table tennis, swimming, all within a few minutes of the Academic Block. The institute also encourages students to take part in Trekking, mountaineering and cycling.

How to reach IIT Mandi

By Train: The nearest narrow Gauge railway stations is at Joginder Nagar around 55 Km from Mandi. Toy trains run between Pathankot and Jogindernagar. Nearest Broad Gauge railway station from Mandi is Pathankot around 200 Km.

By Road: Mandi is connected by National Highway from Pathankot and other parts of Punjab. Highway also connects Shimla and Mandi. Frequent buses ply from Chandigarh, Pathankot and Delhi to Mandi. HRTC also offers regular bus services from all the main towns of Himachal Prades to Mandi. IIT Mandi is well connected by road from other cities like like Manali, Palampur and Dharamshala.

By Air: The nearest airport from Mandi is at Bhuntar Airport in Kullu around 50 km from Mandi.
