Nurpur – A Historical Town in Himachal

Nurpur is a small town in Himachal Pradesh located near Punjab and Himachal boarder. Nurpur has historical importance and is very famous for an splendid and old fort and a famous temple of Brij Raj.

Earlier name of Nurpur was Dhameri. Nurpur is named after Nurjehan, wife of Jehangir, the then Mughal Emperor who visited Nurpur in 1672. The Emperor Jehangir and his wife Nurjehan fell in love with this place when they visited here for the first time.

Brij Maharaj temple Nurpur

Yet another famous place to visit in Nurpur is Brij Maharaj temple. The famous and ancient Brij Maharaj temple is located inside the fort complex. Brij Maharaj temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and it has a elegant black stone idol of the Lord Krishna.

The Idol of the Lord in Brij Maharaj temple was brought from Rajasthan during Raja Jagat Singh's reign. The walls of Brij Maharaj temple are decorated with exquisite paintings from Indian mythology.
