The potato crop is essential to the livelihood of a large number of peoples residing in far areas, elsewhere it is less essential, but still very important for subsistence and income generation. Potato contributes in two different ways to the livelihoods of the poor peoples.

Potato Development Centre, Ahla – Dalhousie in district Chamba was established to aid the potato growers of the far area in fulfilling its mandate "To strengthen the primary and value-added growth, Competitiveness, Innovation and Sustainability".

The potato crop is essential to the livelihood of a large number of peoples residing in far areas, elsewhere it is less essential, but still very important for subsistence and income generation. Potato contributes in two different ways to the livelihoods of the poor peoples. In far areas potato is a staple grown and eaten by the peoples where it contributes directly as substitutes of food grains. Elsewhere potato is a high value crop which contributes principally to poverty reduction by increasing income or creating employment.

The Potato Development Centre is strategically located in the center of the potato belt and provides specialized service to hundred of potato growers and their counterparts - Processors, Agricultural chemical suppliers, Consultants and others; throughout the area.

The Centre and its staff are able to provide an excellent resource of management tools and expertise to the area's potato growers. Expertise is available in the areas of plant propagation; seed, table and processing production; business entrepreneurship and innovative technology.
