Lohri is the festival celebrated after the sowing of Ravi crop, a winter crop in north, especially in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. As this festival comes in the month of Magh(January) therefore it is also known as 'Maghi' festival. The main motive of celebrating Lohri is to pray for fertility and prosperity.


It is believed that on Lohri the sun starts its Northward journey. Sun moves to the hemisphere of the Makar and this movement is termed Uttarayan.

Bonfire is the trademark identity of Lohri with men and women dancing around it to the tune of local music in the night. There are many popular songs of Lohri one of which is-

It is believed that during Lohri Lord Krishna listens to the urges of his disciples. People with full of enthusiasm pray to lord Krishna for their happiness and for the protection of their crops.

Khichri is the most popular dish prepared on the festival of Lohri in Himachal. Khichri is prepares with help of all the delicious ingredients like asafoetida, zeera, garam masala etc. Taste of khichri is incomplete without the pure desi Ghee.
