Himachal Pradesh is known as land of gods and snow. With winter season is on its doorstep Himachal Pradesh is ready for holding various winter sports. This article will provides you the information of various places of Himachal where winter games are held.



In winter snowfall is the major attraction of Himachal Pradesh. Apart from offering a wonderful environment this state also offers various winter games in the month of December to March. The major games which are organised in Himachal Pradesh during winter includes-

  • Mountaineering & Ice climbing


  • There are various places in Himachal where you can enjoy these sports in winter. Here is the list of some important and famous places where these winter festivals are held in this beautiful state.

    1. Manali-


    Manali is the centre of attraction for tourists in winter. This place is blessed with natural slopes ideal for skiing, heli skiing and mountaineering.
    Best places for heli skiing in Manali are Deo Tibba, Hanuman Tibba, Chandekahani and Rohtang pass.

    Skiing is also a sport which is organised in Solang Nalla a place situated 13 km away from the Manali. Skiing courses are also conducted by the Directorate of Mountaineering and allied sports, Manali.

  • Manali by Air-


  • Nearest airport from Manali is at Bhumtar (50 km away from Manali). Bhumtar is well connected with regular flights from Dehli.

  • Manali by train-


  • Joginder Nagar is the nearest narrow gauge railway station which is also 50 km from Manali.

  • Manali by Bus-


  • Manali is well connected from Chandigarh and Dehli by bus and journey along the river Beas is really a treat to watch.



    2. Shimla-


    Shimla is the best tourist place to enjoy winter sports. Major sports which are organised her includes Kufri, Narkanda and ice skating rink in Shimla. The major winter sports organised here are ice skating and skiing.
    Ice skating rink of Shimla is the largest in India and also the only natural skating rink in Asia.

    For those who love skiing Shimla never disappoints. Kufri is a very famous place for skiing and also the oldest one in Himachal Pradesh.
    Beside from Kufri one can also enjoy skiing in Narkanda a place situated in Shimla on Shimla-Rampur highway. Skiing here was started in 1980s. The best place for skiing in Narkanda is Hatu peak slope.

  • Shimla is accessible from Chandigarh (4 hours journey) and Dehli (9 hours journey) by bus.

  • Shimla by Train-


  • Shimla has narrow gauge railway station. The nearest broad gauge railway station is situated in Kalka (90 km from Shimla).

  • Shimla by Air-


  • We can also reach Shimla by air as it contains airport well connected with all major airports of India.


    3. Dalhousie-


    Dalhousie is a beautiful hill station situated in Dahuladhar range of Himachal Pradesh. It was established in 1854 and Lord Dalhousie who was the British Viceroy in India during that time.
    Skiing, ice skating and mountaineering are the major events of winter in Dalhousie.

  • Two major airports near Dalhousie are Pathankot ( 80 km from Dalhousie) and Gaggal, Kangra ( 140 km from Dalhousie). These two airports are well connected from all the major airports of India.

  • Nearest railway station is at Pathankot 80 km away from Dalhousie.

  • Dalhousie by Road-


  • You can reach Dalhousie by bus also through Pathankot-Chamba highway.


    4. Kinnaur-


    Kinnaur is the hill station famous for its green valleys and wonderful atmosphere. Sangla valley and Hangrang valley of kinnaur are really treat to watch.

  • We can reach Kinnaur by bus through HindustanTibet Road (National Highway No. 22). It is situated 250 km away from Shimla.

  • Kinnaur by train-


  • Nearest narrow gauge railway station is Shimla while broad gauge railway station is Kalka (350 km from Kinnaur).

  • Kinnaur by air-


  • Nearest airport is Shimla which is well connected from all the major airports of India.
