Pattern and preparation of HPAS (Himachal Pradesh administrative services) Preliminary exam

HPAS or Himachal Pradesh administrative service is one of the most prestigious exams of the state. Every year thousands of people appear in this exam with a dream of being a part of Himachal’s administration. But to prepare for HPAS it’s mandatory that student first know that what is the pattern of the new preliminary exam of HPAS?

Pattern of Himachal Pradesh administrative services (HPAS) preliminary exam has been changed from as it was in previous years. A new pattern of HPAS preliminary exam has been introduced with significant changes came into effect from 2011. This examination consists of two important papers same as seen in most of the first class entrances, first one is general aptitude paper examination and second one is general studies. Syllabus for these exams is same as decided by UPSC and some questions on Himachal Pradesh. This new pattern is very much similar to other competitive exams of UPSC.

Paper one of the HPAS Preliminary examination (general studies)

HPAS preliminary exam contains two tests and first is test of general studies which is of 200 marks and total number of questions for this exam is 100 and all of the questions are of multiple choice types (MCQs). These questions belong to the different fields like: socio economic development, history, art and culture, geography and political science of Himachal Pradesh.

Some other topics were also important and which can also be the part of general studies are: current events both national and international, geography of India and World, Indian politics and governance, Indian- constitution, public policies, rights and issues. Social and economic development also forms a part of general studies which includes: sustainable development, poverty, social sector initiatives, and demographics.

General sciences and ecosystem and environmental sciences also included in this paper. This paper is very much important and also easy one because all of the student which are aware of current events and have some interest in day to day happenings around them can clear this part of exam easily.

Second part of the HPAS Preliminary examination (general aptitude)

Second part of the HPAS preliminary examination is the general aptitude test. This paper also has same weightage as that of first part of examination, 200 marks and also contains 100 multiple choice questions. The fields included in this paper were: interpersonal skills, communication skills, comprehensions, reasoning and logical questions, questions for testing the analytical ability of a person, questions depicting the problem solving ability of an individual, decision making quality testing.

Basic mathematical reasoning like: number systems, tenth level mathematics, basic algebraic questions, profit and loss type questions, questions related to simple and compound interest, time and distance related questions. Some questions indicating data interpretation skills: histograms, and tables and some questions related to the English language.

New changes in the HPAS examination scheme

  • Negative marking has been introduced for the all MCQs in both parts of preliminary examination. For every three wrong answers given by the student, marks of one right answer will be deducted as penalty which means there are 1/3rd negative marking.
  • Sometimes students used to mark more than one options for a single question. To check this problem now that question will be regarded as wrong no matter if one of the marked option is right and this question will also be included for negative marking.
  • If a question was left untouched by a student in that case there will be no negative marking.

Preparation of HPAS Preliminary exam
